In this video I show how to “see” trees as an artist not as a camera. We need to be able to reduce the tree to its simple shape and mass before attempting to apply the values and color. I also show examples of how other artists have simplified values and shapes as well as how they thought about the colors they used.

Frustrating Summer Greens
I've put together this brochure on Frustrating Summer Greens because it is one of the big challenges artists face when painting outside in spring and summer. It seems like everything is the color green. Gaining a better skill level in mixing greens will help artists have more successful paintings when facing this challenge.
the art of painting trees
Trees are very busy looking with too many branches going in all directions. so to paint them you have to simplify the shape. It helps to think in terms of designing a shape that reduces the detail and makes it easier for the viewer to look at.
working with color
When we look at a landscape, whether it's outside or from a photograph, we naturally tend to isolate an area and try to mix a color that matches what we see. It's much more effective to compare colors that are next to each other, then think in terms of the colors on the color wheel.

Phil Starke
I've been a professional artist for almost 40 years. As an artist, I understand the struggles artists have as they develop their skills. As a workshop and online instructor, I continue to see these common struggles among art students.
I struggled with these skills early on when I began to paint, but when I understood why they were important and how to place them properly in my paintings I saw just how important they were and what a difference they made in my paintings. From then on I was able to focus on the distinct look I wanted in my paintings, no longer wondering why my paintings weren't working out. Everything began to flow naturally. And so I began my career as a professional artist.
I've been teaching all over this country for over 30 years and then began teaching online since 2009. In that time I've worked with hundreds of artists and there's generally a common struggle had by nearly all students.
