Do you have favorite, memorable photos of children or adults you wish you could paint?

I've got a smart phone full of photos I've taken when I'm out with family or friends, or on a painting trip.  I'll bet you do too!

These days, smart phones give us instant access to a good camera.  We can take good pictures of everyday people doing ordinary things, any time, any place.  Whether it's at the park or a sporting event or even in your backyard with friends and family, our phones can provide good material for painting.

The problem is, how do you turn those images into paintings? The camera doesn't always give us the best composition or color, and painting the figure can be very difficult.

Whether it's painting children or adults, you have to deal with proportions, showing action or mood, as well as how to simplify and eliminate detail.  It's hard to know where to begin with the figure. Should I jump right into the painting, or should I do a detailed drawing first?  How do I know what to eliminate in the photo? What's important and what's not? What colors best express my subject?

It's easy to ruin your painting with too much detail, and frustrating trying to stay loose with good brushwork.

I'm Happy To Bring To You My Online Workshop

In my online course, THE EVERYDAY FIGURE, I demonstrate how to turn these pictures we take everyday into paintings.  The course has 9 full length demonstrations where I show how to create good compositions and think through the process of simplifying and constructing the painting.  I show how to "see" your subject in terms of simple shapes and values that make it easier to draw and place the figure in its environment.  You'll also learn how to think about color to better suggest the light and form, how to suggest movement, and create subtle color and value changes that refine the painting.

Here's what people are saying about studying with Phil Starke

"Phil Starke's lessons have been the most useful to me that I have found. After years of art school and books getting me nowhere, a few truly useful tips from his videos have helped my paintings improve dramatically. Phil's videos and lessons are full of extremely useful information. Having the right tools and information has helped me make progress. I highly recommend any Phil Starke classes or videos to anyone serious about learning to paint."
Brad P.
Phil makes each lesson so interesting that I want to keep learning from him. His video lessons are exceptional because he goes into great depth to explain what will make the painting better. Phil is unique because I believe he really cares about his students.  He puts so much time, energy, and effort into his teaching methods that, in my opinion, he leaves all the other instructors in the dust.
Cindy S.
I am loving your lessons.  I think I could spend the rest of my life working on each lesson.  I guess that's the point.  They are the bridge between my painting on my own for the last five years, and getting to better paintings.  The lessons showcase your own expertise as a teacher, and they address the challenges I have.  I was blown away to see you in the very first lesson, take a photograph to a really nice painting.

I admire how you can paint literlally anything. The resources you have assembled/created are really valuable. Your lessons help me UNDERSTAND more of Carlson (AND Payne) then ever before. I am interested in constantly improving my work.

Introduction Module

The Introductory Module gives you a jump start so you can dive right into the workshop. A video and supply list are included within this Module.

Module 1: Adults

Video 1: Establishing The Masses - 2 hrs. 13 min.

This video demo demonstrates the importance of establishing the large shapes or masses of dark and light, this sets up the composition as well as establishing light direction.  It's the important first step before any detail or subtle value and color changes take place.

Video 2: Simplifing A Busy Scene - 2 hrs. 48 min.

In this video demonstration I show how to paint figures in a busy scene, how to decide what's important and what can be eliminated. The importance of simplifying the shapes and values so that color is an easier process to understand.

Video 3: Suggesting The Figure - 2 hrs. 38 min.

In this video the figures are smaller and the landscape (or cityscape in this case) is bigger, so it helps to be able to suggest what's going on with the figure, using bigger brushstrokes to suggest form and cut down on detail.

Video 4: Using Subtle Values and Colors - 2 hrs. 6 min.

This video focuses on how to show depth by using subtle value and color changes as well as a variety of hard and soft edges in the large masses of color.

Module 2: Children

Video 1: Backlighting - 3 hrs. 12 min.

The focus of this video is suggesting light, how it affects the form and color of the subject, as well as using negative shapes to simplify and achieve accurate proportions.

Video 2: Children In Motion - 2 hrs. 29 min.

In this video I demonstrate how to capture the action of children playing soccer.  I show how to create movement in the figures and how to keep them from looking stiff.

Video 3: Finding The Shadow Pattern in the Figure - 2 hrs. 1 min.

In this video the figures are smaller and the landscape (or cityscape in this case) is bigger, so it helps to be able to suggest what's going on with the figure, using bigger brushstrokes to suggest form and cut down on detail.

The 4 Bonuses

There are 4 bonuses for this workshop.  Each Bonus is designed to take you a little deeper into skill development.  See below for full descriptions.

BONUS

Four Great Bonuses To Take You Further!

Bonus 1

"Reclining Figures - Capturing The Gesture"

Reclining figures can be a little tricky.  In figures laying on the ground or on a couch, there is a gesture to them, a movement of line that keeps the figures from looking stiff.  In this video I show how to capture the attitude of reclining figures, using longer brushstrokes to show more fluidity.

Bonus 2

"Planes of the Head"

In this video I demonstrate how to understand and use the planes of the head to simplify and show form and solidity.  Without an understanding of the planes of the head, the heads you paint will look mushy and amateurish.

Bonus 3

"Quarterly Coaching Session Webinars"

FREE Professional Development Webinars for Members of "The Everyday Figure" Workshop only.  I'll be doing quarterly webinars to continue to work with members on this skill development. This Bonus alone keeps the education in this Workshop growing.

Bonus 4

"Working With Photographs"

Photographs are a great tool to use in painting. But there are a lot of problems when working from photos, and it helps to be aware of what they are. In this art guide I go over each of these problems and explain solutions to them.

"The video format and online platform is just excellent. I can replay something as many times as I want and don't torture you to repeat yourself multiple times.  I can revisit other lessons when I am working on something of my own.  I can stop a video as well, find someone's sneaker or something, then come back whenever I want to. I really think anyone should complete these lessons before tearing around the country and studying with other artists.
I want you to know now much I appreciated getting this information. It helped me think about how to attack the improvement of my work overall. Thank you so much for your patience and generous gift of your time."
Andrea K.
"Phil is an extremely gifted painter and a great instructor. He is very generous with his time and sharing of his talent. There is always something to learn no matter how much of a success you have become or status you might have achieved... (or think you have achieved!) If anyone has the opportunity to sign up for one of Phil's workshops... Do it now! You will not regret it!"
Tony D.

"Phil's lessons have been fabulous for me. I have watched them over and over many times.  For me, of all the teachers I've taken from, to watch someone who can not only paint beautifully, but to articulate and tell us what he's doing and why he's doing it, and being able to do it while he's actually painting, is so important.
I think the style of teaching that Phil does, it is obvious that he loves to teach. I find that it's been a very, very rewarding experience for me. It's just been, for me personally, a way to grow with leaps and bounds and become confident and comfortable with what I'm doing.."

My personal note

I know the mere mention of painting figures can be intimidating.  But I'm not talking about the polished work of portrait painting.  I want you to be able to take those photos you love of your family or friends, or figures from the beach, the market, or the park, and be able to put those figures into a painting.

I'm very happy with this online workshop, and feel confident that I will be able to bring clarity and build your skill in bringing some of your favorite photos to life in your paintings.

I look forward to working with you to help you build this skill.  I've painted several of my grandchildren at play, reading, and in the lap of their parents.  I've also painted interesting people from parks and markets.  It's very enjoyable to be able to take some of my favorite photos and create paintings from them.

Join me in this workshop and learn how to turn your favorite, memorable photos into works of art!
